The Michael Ondaatje Series presents: Elyse Friedman

On October 7th, Elyse will be reading from her latest book, The Answer to Everything at 4:30pm in the Senior Common Room; 3rd floor, York Hall.

Friedman was born in Toronto and raised in North York, and is the author of three novels and two collections of stories.

Then Again, published in 1999 by Random House, is a novel that deals with the lingering effects of the holocaust on the children of survivors as well as how subjective memory operates within the family context.

Long Story Short, a series of short stories published in 2004 by Anansi, chronicles the lives of six “perverse and eccentric protagonists” whose lives have unraveled.  In 2004 Broadway Books published Waking Beauty, a novel about a fat, homely, and depressed young woman who wakes one morning with the body of a supermodel; in 2007 Anansi published Long Story Short, a novella and stories that the Toronto Star described as “part Kafka, part South Park.” One of these short stories won gold in the 2006 National Magazine Awards.

Elyse Friedman is also the author of two screenplays; Suddenly Naked (2001), nominated for six Genie Awards, is about a novelist who falls in love with a young writer, and Birds of America, in 2008. She has also published a book of poetry entitled Know Your Monkey, published by ECW Press in 2003.

This fall, HarperCollins published The Answer to Everything, a novel about cast of remarkable characters who get involved in a start-up cult that spirals out of control. The unfolding narrative takes everyone along on an often hilarious, but always profound saga that also provides an x-ray of contemporary society.
